Hawaii Parent - May-June 2024

116 HAWAII PARENT May/June 2024 Cultural Sensitivity: Help children to understand and respect cultural differences and teach them to be open-minded and accept others’ customs and traditions. Children who learn different belief systems are less likely to judge others and are more likely to develop well-rounded relationships. Gratitude and Acknowledgment: Practice gratitude by encouraging children to express thanks and appreciation. Gratitude has been known to improve sleep, reduce stress, and increase optimism, even contributing to healthier relationships and setting the conversations, using devices in moderation, and respecting others’ privacy. Electronic device addiction can cause psychological dependence, which may result in serious behavioral issues. Apologizing and Forgiving: Teach children how to sincerely apologize when they make a mistake and encourage them to forgive others. By modeling this behavior yourself, you can show them that apologizing is not a sign of weakness but rather a sign of strength and maturity. Emphasize that forgiving others does not mean forgetting the harm caused but rather choosing to move past it for their own emotional well-being. Introducing children to different cultures not only broadens their perspective of the world but also fosters the development of good manners and empathy. “Children who learn different belief systems are less likely to judge others and are more likely to develop well-rounded relationships.” Photo courtesy of Waimea Valley.
