Dear Friends, As the holiday season draws near, I wanted to take a moment to express our utmost gratitude for your unwavering support and loyalty to our family-owned jewelry store over the past 167 years. Each and every one of you holds a special place in our hearts, and it is an honor to serve you and be a part of your lives. As we reflect on our storied history, we are humbled by the countless moments we have had the privilege of being involved in. Each piece of jewelry carries not only the weight of our craftsmanship but also the stories of love, resilience, and cherished relationships that it represents. It fills our hearts with joy to know that our creations have become treasured heirlooms, passed down through generations, reflecting the enduring bonds of your family. Whether we’ve been in your community for generations, years or just a few months, we are both proud and humbled by the opportunity to serve you. During this holiday season, we want to extend our warmest wishes to you and your loved ones. May the spirit of the season bring you love, joy, and peace. As you gather with family and friends, may our jewelry continue to be a symbol of the special moments you share together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Wishing you a joyful holiday season. With heartfelt appreciation, ONCE UPON A TIME ... Our story began in 1856, when jeweler and watchmaker Adolph Doederlein opened a jewelry shop along the bustling cobble- lined streets of Munich, Bavaria. He was renowned, not only for his exquisite craftsmanship but also as the “Keeper of the Clocks” appointed by the royal court of Munich. A FRESH START In 1906, Adolph’s son Ludwig opened a store in Baltimore’s premiere shopping districts, including East Baltimore Street in 1911 and Park and Lexington in 1917. It was at this location that third- generation, Carl Doederlein, joined the family business. CARRYING ON THE LEGACY In 1930 Carl took the helm and renamed the company under The Carl J. Doederlein Company. He was joined by his daughter, Virginia Doederlein. Virginia married actor and artist Nelson Coleman, who took the reins of the family business. In 1960 he was joined by his oldest son Nelson Coleman, III, who introduced his brothers Mark and Chris Coleman to the business. In 2014 history was made again, as Amanda Coleman-Phelps became the first female owner in the business’s long history. EXPANDING THE TRADITION Nelson Coleman acquired Jewelry by Designs of Woodbridge, VA in 2020. In February of 2023, a second location of Nelson Coleman opened in downtown Frederick, MD and in August of 2023, Nelson Coleman acquired Shearer the Jeweler in Easton, MD.
